Vetting forages for dairy cows

John Webster

This article has assumed a basic understanding of the nutritive value of forages and the formulation of rations for dairy cows based on metabolisable energy. Anyone needing refreshment on this topic would do well to consult McDonald and others (1981).

The winter feeding of dairy cows is a complex subject that merits considered analysis. Anyone who claims to be able to work out the answers to a winter feeding problem on the back of the proverbial cigarette packet is not giving the topic the attention that it, and the client, deserve. Nevertheless, there are a few final points concerning nutritive value that are useful to have on the tip of one's tongue.
