In recent years, there has been an apparent increase in the incidence of autoimmune disease in the dog. It is difficult to know whether this represents a true increased incidence or just an increased awareness of these diseases coupled with the availability of improved diagnostic tests. The laboratory diagnosis often involves specialised techniques which are only available at certain university departments where a research interest is present. Testing by local hospitals is not recommended since most of the tests used on human patients need considerable modification for veterinary species and indeed some tests are not applicable.
