Strep suis type 2 have become established in many UK pig herds in the past 10 years. Although not usually of financial importance, the disease has a demoralising on staff, as well as affecting a significant proportion of pigs.
Control by vaccination or medication has not been outstandingly successful, but the adoption of good management hygiene technique, coupled with skilled nursing of pigs, has given good results. Farms that have removed pigs, cleaned their premises and restocked six weeks later been reported as remaining free from the disease.
