The constant striving to improve the efficiency of production of meat causes, in its wake, problems which are first encountered by clinicians. An understanding of how muscle works and responds to changing circumstances is important in order to recognise the nature of the problem and to initiate its solution. In many cases expert laboratory assistance may be required. In others, however, application of basic knowledge and simple neurological and biochemical tests can suggest the diagnosis which is essential for effective treatment and control.
