Coping with loss

Neil Smart

IN this article, Neil Smart looks at coping with loss. As a vet who left the profession to enter the church, Reverend Smart had to learn how to help people suffering from profound loss and grief. He realised, looking back, that there were many similarities with the veterinary practice situation when clients lose a pet. Here he outlines some methods relevant to veterinary surgeons, nurses and receptionists as they comfort those who grieve.

Neil Smart qualified from Bristol in 1984 and soon afterwards gained a certificate in small animal dermatology. For 10 years, he was a partner in a large mixed practice in the New Forest. During this time he set up and ran a small animal dermatology referral service, was involved in the British Veterinary Dermatology Study Group, and tried to avoid pot-bellied pigs. In managing the practice nurse team, he developed an interest in personnel and practice management. He is currently a curate in Shirley, Southampton.
