THE provision of out-of-hours cover, often regarded as an integral part of practice life, places a huge burden on those who have to provide the care. Some practices are now pursuing alternative options, such as the use of a dedicated emergency clinic service. In this article, Judith Joyce discusses some of the reasons why her practice decided to keep its out-of-hours cover in-house and employ a veterinary surgeon purely to do the weekend work.
