Update on sheep scab

CHRIS LEWIS 1

1 Shrewsbury Veterinary Investigation Centre

SHEEP scab, probably the most infectious condition of sheep in Britain today, has become widespread in the UK since it was deregulated in July 1992. While traditionally a disease of autumn and winter, outbreaks are now recorded in most months of the year (the author encountered the worst case he has ever seen in the hottest week of August 1995). There is a great need for education and advice if the sheep industry is to rid itself of the scourge of sheep scab and, here, the veterinary profession has an important role to play.
